Benchmarking trends in genomics to make a long-term action plan for Korean Health and Genome Initiative project

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose : Concept of ’personalized’ and ’preventive’ medicines has emerged as an important issue among scientists in the medical genomics and genetics field as well as the pharmaceutical companies since the post-human genome project era has been initiated. The aim of this project was to benchmark national and international trends in
the cohort-based genomics area in view of making a long-term action plan for the Korean Health and Genome Initiative (KoHGI) project that has been undertaken by the Center for Genome Science (CGS), KNIH since 2002.
Methods : We investigated medical genomics-related literature and data by web-searching and interviewing scientists of the community. We also collected information on the current status of the KoHGI project including the genome-wide genotpying studies using large-scale population-based cohorts. On the other hand, future direction of the national institutes of health of USA has been benchmarked to provide us with perspectives from the international community. We finally held a public hearing to openly discuss the issues.
Results : We suggest several points based on data from the benchmark. (1) centralization of biosamples and epidemiological data from large-scale cohorts and establishing intra-structure for the national bio-bank system (2) Promotion of interactive networking and collaboration between the Korea Biomedical Genomics Research Association
and CGS as well as CGS and the international population genomics study groups.
Conclusions : The perspectives suggested by this project will be intensively considered and used as invaluable information to make a long-term action plan for KoGHI.
